Kunal Shah is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at CRED. He has founded multiple companies including FreeCharge (a Financial Service Company based in Gurugram). He is the founder and Ex-CEO of Freecharge.  Kunal is also an angel investor for many Start-Ups like Go-Jek, Zilingo, Unacademy, Shuttl, Chillr, Innov8, Lifcare, TinyOwl, Spinny, Jugnoo, Mobile Premier League (MPL), Azani, Tapzo, Runnr, Flyrobe, Razorpay, Voonik, TVF, PocketAces, Rupeek, Dil Mil and many more.

EDUCATION   

Shah graduated with Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy from Wilson College, Mumbai and briefly pursued MBA from SVKM's NMIMS before dropping out.


CAREER

Shah's first startup venture was a company named Paisaback, which provided cash-back promotions for organized retailers. The days he worked in the company Paisaback, he would try to tie up with localised centres of companies like McDonald’s or Dominos to offer cash back offers to the customers which were referred by Paisaback. But the model didn’t last long. So he came up with a new idea and shutdown PaisaBack to set up FreeCharge in August 2010 along with Sandeep Tandon. 

Freecharge always very clearly knew that youngsters were their target audience and hence its marketing strategies were purely focused towards it. In their beginning days, they reached out to the IIM’s and IIT’s students to urge them to recharge through them. It would be hard to digest for all of you, but their team also created a fake Facebook ID with some random beautiful girl’s photos which obviously got thousands of friends. Now this way their posts reached much more people from than ever before, Freecharge also used several other creative and technologically possible mediums to promote itself. Due to such strategies FreeCharge gained a lot of attention. And their growth turned out to be so fast and viral that, within just a year, Freecharge got listed as one of the most promising technology startups from India by Pluggd.in.

Interestingly, the year of 2013 also saw an unusual turn in their events! Kunal who till now acted as the CEO of the company, announced that he was formally stepping down to take care of other planning and operational aspects like growing their merchant & client network, and had now appointed Alok Goel (Ex-COO of redBus.in) as the new CEO. Many experts and guru’s believed this to be a wise decision, as Kunal’s forte lied in Planning, Ideation & Strategizing and execution was doing nothing but diverting his focus. And the belief was right.

In April 2015, FreeCharge was acquired by Snapdeal for an estimated amount of $400 million. Shah was appointed as the new CEO of the company. After that, FreeCharge continued to be run as an independent entity under Shah's leadership. He, however, left the firm in October 2016. Subsequently, in July 2017, Axis Bank acquired FreeCharge.

THEN, in April 2018, he Founded CRED (a credit card bill payment platform that rewards its members for clearing their credit card bills on time). Which is now considered as the second fastest growing unicorn start-up in India.

2. He is very vocal about his opinions. And is very active on social media. He has over 3 lakh Twitter followers and over 80K (eighty thousand) followers on Instagram (as of May 2021).

3. CRED processes roughly 20% of credit card bill payments in India.

4. He is inspired by Steve Jobs.
