Varun Baranwal is currently an IAS officer. He secured third rank in the state (Maharashtra) and got an all-India rank of 32 in the Union Public Services Commission (UPSC) examination in December. He cleared UPSC in his first attempt. Varun is an inspiration for many people who belong from poor households but still dream big and have the determination to achieve their dreams.
Varun Baranwal was born in Boisar, in Palghar district of Maharashtra. His financial condition was not good as his father owned a cycle repair shop and his mother was a housewife. They were 4 siblings and his father had all their responsibility. When Varun was a kid he wanted to be a doctor. But when he was in Class 10 his father died of a heart attack, his dreams were crumbled.
To earn money and feed the family Varun started working in his father's cycle repair shop. But as he scored second highest marks in his hometown in the board exams, his mother wanted him to continue his studies. So when he decided to resume his studies, he applied for the nearest college but the admission fees was 10000 and they didn't have that amount of money so he dropped the plan and decide to accept his fate and start working at the cycle repair shop again.
Fortunately, the doctor who treated his father came to know that that Varun could not continue his studies because of financial condition, he immediately gave him the money he needed for his school fees. Varun started going to his college and gave tuitions in the afternoon to pay his monthly fee and also helped her mother at the cycle repair shop. His teachers were very supportive to him.
After Class 12, it was time for Varun to follow his passion and enroll in medical college. But since this too was expensive for him, he decided to prepare for engineering instead. The family got together all it had saved, sold the piece of ancestral land it possessed and paid the fees for Varun’s first year of engineering. “I used to teach my classmates. There were six friends from Afghanistan who had a tough time understanding the education pattern here. And then there was a classmate who had to visit Germany for his sport activities and could attend very few classes. So, I helped them. These friends and my teachers paid my fees for the second year of engineering,” said Varun.
Scholarship took care of the third year and final year fees. In 2012, when Varun was in his final year, he received a job offer from a multinational company – Deloitte. His hard work gave results, now he and his family could live a happy life but his life took a turn as he attend Anna Hazare’s movement for the Jan Lokpal Bill and the anti-corruption fight moved him. He wanted to serve people by joining the administration rather than being selfish and living a prosperous life.
In June 2012, Varun graduated from engineering college. He had six months to join Deloitte and he decided to make use of those six months to prepare for the UPSC exams, his roommate helpd him to prepare for his exams and an NGO provided him with the books he needed to study.
Finally, in 2014, he secured All India Rank (AIR) 32 in the UPSC exam and got the third rank in his state (Maharashtra).
His journey inspires us a lot, he struggled a lot for getting the education that we have always been taking for granted. Respect and gratitude to Dr. Kampli who helped him to continue his studies by providing him those 10,000 rupees and all his teachers and his family who helped him come this far, he himself who never lost his hope and just worked hard. His hard work gave results .
